You’ve Made Your Strategic Plan. Now What? (Part 1)

Aug 29, 2023

We often help law firms to create a strategic marketing plan. But what happens next?

On the way to implementing that strategy, people often need help to stay on track and focus on their marketing goals. And there are two things that are likely to stall a strategy – they have too many ideas or no idea where to start.

In today’s post, let’s talk about the first problem: What happens when you have way too many ideas?

Ideas are great, but there can be too much of a good thing. You’ve often got some powerful stakeholders with competing ideas at the table. Debating endlessly over the best way to achieve a goal can bring your progress to a grinding halt.

Here’s how we keep too many ideas from smothering a strategy:

💡 Have the right people at the table to start. We have found it’s best to have 2-3 senior stakeholders involved in the project from the beginning, including any partners whose buy-in is needed, to avoid creating a long process where all the ideas get shot down at the end.
💡 Work with a small number of ideas. We narrow down the list of ideas to a maximum of 3-5 projects that will have the greatest impact.
💡 Make sure the client’s voice is represented. Whether you include a staff member with a lot of knowledge of the client base or interview/survey clients as part of the process, you want the end result to speak to your ideal target audience – not just what you think sounds good.

Next week we’ll talk about problem two – having a goal but not knowing where to begin. In the meantime, if you need help with your marketing, whether it’s putting together a strategy or winnowing down some ideas, give us a shout.
